Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics

Gain rigorous training in statistical theories and methods within a collaborative research environment through the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Statistics in Temple University’s Fox School of Business. Working closely with world-class faculty at Temple University, you’ll acquire

the ability to undertake original research for peer-reviewed academic publications;

The recommended background for Statistics PhD students includes math, computer science or programming, probability, and writing and communication. All applicants must have completed coursework in Differential and Integral Calculus, including Multivariable Calculus, as well as a course in Linear Algebra. Tuition & Fees

In keeping with Temple’s commitment to access and affordability, this Doctor of Philosophy offers a competitive level of tuition with multiple opportunities for financial support.

Tuition rates are set annually by the university and are affected by multiple factors, including program degree level (undergraduate or graduate), course load (full- or part-time), in-state or out-of-state residency, and more. These tuition costs apply to the 2024–2025 academic year.

Pennsylvania resident: $1,000.00 per credit
Out-of-state: $1,250.00 per credit

Examinations and Dissertation

All students are required to take a Screening Exam in the summer between their first and second years. Having passed the Screening Exam, students will continue to meet course requirements and simultaneously explore research interests to pursue for their dissertation. Once a student completes the coursework component of the program, they must then take and pass the Preliminary Exam within one semester’s time.

The Screening Exam is graded pass or fail. Students are only allowed two opportunities to take the Screening Exam.

The distinguishing characteristic of the PhD program is its Research Dissertation. The dissertation proposal demonstrates the student's knowledge of and ability to conduct the proposed research. The proposal should consist of

a detailed methodological plan for investigating the problem;
an exhaustive survey and review of literature related to the problem;
the context and background surrounding a particular research problem; and
solid preliminary evidence of the research development.

The proposal should generally be completed and approved no more than one year after completing coursework. Upon approval, a timeline for completing the investigation and writing process is established.

An original empirical study that makes a significant contribution to the field, a student’s dissertation should expand the existing knowledge and demonstrate the student's knowledge of both research methods and a mastery of her/his primary area of interest. Dissertations should be rigorously investigated; uphold the ethics and standard of the field; demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the primary area of interst and related fields; and be prepared for publication in an academic journal.
